The kaleidoscope was invented and exhibited in 1816 by Sir David Brewster at the age of 35 . (The patent would be granted in 1817.)  Brewster was already an established philosopher, writer, scientist, and inventor. His kaleidoscope created unprecedented clamor.  

It was invented in 1816, quite by accident, during experiments with the polarization and refraction of light.
